Preliminary Exercises 1: Ferdinand de Saussure's Theory of Semiotics Analysis


The concept of semiotics is, that the way something is portrayed is not always as it is. Ferdinand de Saussuree was a Swiss linguist, semiotician, and philosopher his theory is language is ultimately not a function of reality, but a self-contained system. Signifier is the word the image and signified is what it means. This theory is beneficial to the research of film by understanding that the 'sign' can have a deeper meaning
